A sticker is a copy of the subject of a photo, that you can then paste into a message or onto another photo. In this blog post we will show you how to create a sticker on your iPhone.
They can be highly customizable, and are a fun and different way to respond to friends and family.
How to do it
The first step is to find a photo with a subject that you want to make into a sticker.
For example, below you will see a photos of a sea turtle, and a family of bears.
These are good photos to make a sticker out of since it has a very clear subject and there is not too much going on in the background. Sometimes when selecting the subject it also grabs pieces from the background if it is very busy/noisy, or blends in with the subject.
In order to make the selection, you will need to hold your finger down on the subject of the photo until you see lines of highlight over it. Once highlighted, a popup will appear with the options for copy, add sticker, and share.

Choose the add sticker option and it will add it to your sticker library.
Once in the library, you can choose a few different choices for how it will display when used as a sticker by choosing the “add effect” option.
These effects are:
- Original
- Outline
- Comic
- Puffy
- Shiny

Play around with them and see which effects you like the most. As can be seen in the examples, the outline option shows best when the phone is in dark mode.
These effects can also be accessed afterwards by simply holding down your finger on the sticker in the sticker library. You can also rearrange the sticker library and delete stickers from this menu. This menu can be accessed by hitting the + sign in the circle next to the typing area in the messages app.

How to use them
These stickers are best utilized in the iMessage app.
Open the aforementioned menu by hitting the + sign in the circle next to the typing area. You will see this list, select Stickers.
Within iMessage you have the ability to drag them up into the conversation area. This is meant to emulate the feeling of putting a real sticker on a piece of paper.
Unfortunately they can not be put in any spot of the message thread. There is an invisible perimeter where it won’t allow them to be stuck. Putting them near something you sent or near something someone else sent is generally the easiest way.

You can also send them in a similar way as you would send a picture or gif, by just pressing on it instead of dragging it up. Here is an example showing one sent the way you would send a photo, gif, or normal message.

Below is an example of the bear sticker being dragged up into the blank area of the conversation.

Finally here are examples (below and to the right) of three, and then five, of the stickers being displayed.

The biggest turtle was sent with the normal sending method, and all the others were dragged onto the conversation. They can also be overlapped if desired.

Third Party Apps
These can also be sent in other apps like Discord, Messenger, WhatsApp etc, but generally will send as a normal image with a blank white background.
They will also be displayed much larger on these third party apps, and can only be accessed through the Apple Emoji menu at the bottom left of the keyboard.
