With such new and advanced cameras, there are many new iPhone camera settings that users can adjust for their photos and videos.
These settings are not turned on by default, but they are very accessible and easy to adjust. In this blog post we will show you how, and touch on the upsides and downsides of increasing picture and video quality.
Where to access the Camera settings
Open Settings and navigate to the Camera app. On iOS 18 navigate to the App section in your settings, to find the Camera app.
Once in the Camera settings, this will open a menu with a multitude of options.

Video Quality
The top three settings in the Camera app are the main options for determining default video options.
It is important to keep in mind that setting higher video quality will drastically increase the storage size of each video. Whether stored in iCloud or locally on the device, doing this could eventually cause users to run out of storage. Conversely, choosing a lower quality will reduce your file sizes, but the results may not be what you are looking for.

To change the default resolution, click on the top option called “Record Video.”
Here users have the option to either reduce or increase resolution, as well as the frames per second of the video.
For maximum quality, professional looking videos, choose the 4k at 60 fps option. Alternately, the 4k 30 fps option will still be very high quality, and use up a lot less storage than the 60 fps.
There are other options with explanations underneath the quality choice. All are optional depending on user preferences.
The same idea applies to Slo-Mo and Cinematic camera options.
Formats

The formats tab only has two options; High Efficiency and Most Compatible. These choices have to do with file size of the images.
The bottom option will always be maximum quality and it will explain the size of each file generated when choosing each option.
Preserve Settings
Users can also access the camera apps preserve settings.

This allows permanence to settings that otherwise reset to a system default after closing the camera app.
Settings such as camera mode, aspect ratio, light settings, depth control, exposure, night mode, action mode, and live photo regularly reset after closing the camera unless preserve is toggled on for each.
Other Settings in Main Section
In the main section, users will also see some uncategorized settings that can be toggled on and off, as well as composition settings.
Photographic styles offer preset photo filters that are essentially color filters that are applied when taking a photo.
The styles offered are:
- Standard
- Rich Contrast
- Vibrant
- Warm
- Cool
Since it’s easy to edit photos, you may want to stay away from applying color filters by default when taking the photo. They can always be applied at a later time.
Pro Models
These settings may vary and and there are extra features if you own an iPhone Pro or Pro Max. Since those phones have better cameras and an extra lens some features offered are:
- Better sensors
- Better zoom capabilities and quality
- ISO and Shutter speed control
- Wider aperture settings
- Better low light imaging
- Better stability for picture and video
