How to Adjust Notifications on your iPhone

Knowing how to adjust notifications on your iPhone is an important skill to have. It’s also very important to know how to adjust app specific notifications too.

Often people’s phones bombard them with sounds, banners, and pop ups because they are unaware that these can be turned off. Read on to learn more.

How to access notifications settings

First open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Find the “Notifications” section. This should be close to the top.

The general Notifications section shows options for display type, scheduled notifications, lock screen previews and whether or not notifications will display when screen sharing or recording.

Beneath these options You will see list called “Notification Style”.

The list displays all apps on the phone. There is also a short summary of the notifications that are enabled for that specific app.

Once you click on a specific app, you will see notification options for that specific app. Which leads us to our next section.

App Specific Notification Options

You can first choose to turn off/on notifications for that app entirely. Some apps will send a lot of marketing or useless notifications and can be very annoying. Lots of apps don’t really need to send you messages at all.

You can also turn off/on time sensitive notifications. Notifications deemed a priority by the app and will always display on your lock screen and notifications center. An example would be a ring notification from your smart doorbell app. Delivery is immediate and will stay on the lock screen for an hour.

The option to turn off sound is also important. This stops the app from using your default notification sound to alert you that a notification was sent. This can be useful when you want to receive notifications, but don’t need to be alerted instantaneously with a beep. Some cell phone users will accidentally allow apps such as Apple Mail or Gmail to send them sound notifications. This causes them to get potentially hundreds of sound alerts a day, one for each email as it arrives. If that person also happens to be subscribed to a lot of marketing newsletters or gets a lot of unfiltered spam, this can be a very pointless and annoying thing.

Turning off badges is another option. These are the red bubbles with a number that you see on the home screen. These numbers tell you how many notifications or unread items are available in that app. Think about whether this number is meaningful to you. A badge that shows 10,657 unread emails is probably causing stress, not useful information.

You can also turn off/on Siri’s announce option, whether notifications show previews on the lock screen, and how they are grouped on the lock screen, which is similar to the generic display section we went over earlier.

In App Notification Settings

Sometimes an app has its own notifications section. For example, it may display a blue link at the bottom of this settings section that will redirect you to the app itself. The image above shows the blue Amazon Notification Settings button.

This allows you to further fine tune what is being sent to you. It may be marketing, coupons, shipping, or anything else they offer. Here you can turn them all off or turn them off one by one. There will also be other settings related directly to what that app is, which can vary.

Some apps may have their own notifications settings but not link to them from the iPhone’s settings area. If this is the case, open the app, and look for its settings section. Sometimes there will be a gear icon to get to it.
