There is important Windows 10 lifecycle information that all PC users should know and plan for.
In this post we share the end of support date, as well as other policy information and how to move forward.
What exactly is the Windows 10 Lifecycle?
Windows 10 lifecycle refers to the operating system reaching its final version, and no longer receiving updates and support. This applies to security, system bugs, software compatibility, and other important features.
This end of lifecycle applies to both Windows Home and Pro Editions.
You can read the entire Microsoft “Modern Lifecycle Policy” here.
End of Support Date
Microsoft has set the end of support date as October 14, 2025.
The version 22H2 is the final version of the operating system.
Your computer should still function after support has ended, but it will eventually become buggy and incompatible with some programs. It will also become far more vulnerable to viruses and malware as time goes on.
For more information about this, check out the full MS support page.
How to Move Forward
To move forward, first check to see if your device is compatible with Windows 11, and accept their free upgrade if it is offered to you in your update settings.
If you are not sure if your computer is compatible, download the PC Health Check app from Microsoft’s website to let it assess your device.
If your computer is incompatible, or just growing old and slow, you may want to purchase a new device that is already running Windows 11.
Some computers are still being sold with Windows 10, so be sure to check when making your purchase if you do not want to have to update it yourself.
Below is an example of a computer on Best Buy’s website that is still running Windows 10. Be sure to check in the specs what the operating system is whenever purchasing a PC/Laptop.
One exception of note: Windows 10 computers that are used as kiosks, medical equipment, and digital signs, may be controlled under a LTSC contract. Long-Term Servicing Channel users do not have to worry about the expiration of Windows 10. These computers will continue to receive updates if their platforms are based on Windows 10.
