How to Use YouTube: Playlists

In this blog post, you will learn how to create and manage YouTube playlists. Playlists are a great way to organize your favorite videos, making it easier to find and watch them later. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience with YouTube, this guide will provide clear, step-by-step instructions to help you get started.

What is a YouTube Playlist?

A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos that you can organize and watch in a specific order. Playlists can be created from your own videos or from videos uploaded by other users. They are a great way to keep track of videos on a particular topic or theme, or even to store for “Watch Later”.

How to Create a YouTube Playlist

First, sign in to your YouTube account at YouTube.com. If you don’t have an account, create one first. Next, find a video to add to your playlist. Search for a video you want to add and click on the video to start playing it. In our example below I’ve picked video “OfficeWave” to add to our playlist.

By clicking the three horizontal lines in the top left corner, the home menu will “pop-out”. This “pop-out” menu provides access to several sections, including History, Playlists, Watch Later, and Liked Videos, each functioning as its own playlist. The History section lists previously watched videos. Playlists are collections of videos you have curated. The Liked Videos section contains all the videos you have liked, and the Watch Later section includes videos you have set aside to watch when you have more time.

By clicking the three dots … you get the “More” menu, which will pop out. We want to pick “Save” near the bottom of the window.

Once we click on the “Save” Option we will be presented with more choices about our playlist.

Below the video, there is an open menu for saving the video to a playlist. The options displayed include "Watch later," "RetroWavePlaylist," and "kristins comp basics topics." There is also an option to create a new playlist with the name "OfficeWave" being typed in. Below the name input field, there are visibility options for the new playlist: Public (default), Unlisted, and Private. These options dictate who can view the playlist. To the right, there are suggested videos and an advertisement for Grammarly. This image demonstrates how to create a YouTube playlist.

To recap click the “Save” button. Then, select “Create new playlist.” Enter a name for your playlist, “OfficeWave” choose the privacy setting (Public, Unlisted, or Private), and click “Create.” Note that any other option than private requires a creator channel to share your video selections with other YouTube users.

We have now created our very own OfficeWave YouTube Playlist!

To add more videos to your playlist, repeat the process with other videos you want to include.

Advanced YouTube Playlist Settings

Once you have created your YouTube playlist, you might want to customize its settings to better suit your needs. Advanced playlist settings allow you to control how your playlist behaves and is presented to viewers. Here’s how you can make the most out of these settings.

Managing Playlist Privacy Settings

You have the choice to set your created YouTube Playlist privacy to Public, Unlisted, or Private. Public playlists are visible to anyone and can appear in search results. Unlisted playlists are only accessible to people with the link, while Private playlists are only visible to you.

To adjust these settings:

Go to your playlist and click on the “Edit” button (pencil icon).
Under the playlist title, click on the privacy dropdown menu.
Select the desired privacy setting and click “Save.”

Enabling or Disabling Autoplay

Autoplay ensures that videos in your playlist play automatically one after the other, enhancing the viewer’s experience by reducing interruptions.

To enable or disable autoplay:

  • Navigate to your playlist and click on the “Edit” button.
  • Look for the autoplay toggle switch near the top of the playlist settings.
  • Turn the switch on or off according to your preference and save your changes.

You can manually reorder the videos in your playlist to highlight the most important content or create a specific viewing sequence.
