Andrea Casarrubios

Recently announced winner of the I Solo Cello Competition Illa de Menorca-FIDAH 2010 and Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition 2009, Andrea Casarrubios has been awarded first place in numerous competitions including the SOR Solo String Competition (USA, 2009), the Baltimore Music Club String Competition (USA, 2008), the Castilla y León Piano Competition Rio Orbigo (Spain, 2004) and the National Piano Competition Rio del Oro (Spain, 2005). She has won the cello scholarship of Juventudes Musicales of Spain 2009 and 2010, and since 2007 she has been a recipient of the Annual Anonymous Scholarship and the Beatrice Feldman Kahn and Raymond S. Kahn Endowed Cello Scholarship in order to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in cello performance with Professor Amit Peled at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University.

A native of Spain, she began her piano studies at the age of two with composer and pianist Maria Escribano, with whom she continued for twelve years. She contiued her studies with Bulgarian pianist Ludmil Angelov in Toledo (Spain) and Seth Knopp in Baltimore (US). At the age of five Andrea started to take cello lessons and from 2000 until 2007 she was a student of Maria de Macedo in Madrid (Spain), continuing her studies with cellist Lluis Claret in Barcelona (Spain), and currently with Amit Peled in Baltimore (US) at the Peabody Conservatory. Andrea has performed concerts in many countries and participated in festivals such as the Casals Festival in France, the Heifetz Music Festival in the US, the Menuhin Festival in Switzerland, and has performed in masterclasess for acclaimed piano and cello teachers like Ralph kirshbaum, Frans Helmerson, Leon Fleisher, Steven Doane, Paul Katz, David Dolan, Laurence Lesser, Martti Rousi, Christophe Coin, Daniel Grosgurin.

As a winner of the “SOR Solo Competition” she has been the guest artist invited to perform Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata (arrangement for cello and orchestra) in Montana in May 2009 and during the summer of 2011 she will be performing the Haydn C major Cello Concerto as the first prize winner of the Solo Cello Competition FIDAH 2010. Being an active new music performer as well, Andrea has premiered contemporary pieces such “Lambda” for cello solo and dancer by composer Ariyo Shary, and “As the Universe Unfolds” (First Prize “Prix D’Eté 2010″) by composer Griffin Cohen. As a member of theTrio Appassionata (Honors ensemble piano Trio at the Peabody Conservatory) Andrea will be performing at the Carnegie Hall in New York, in March 2011.

Join us in this celebration of achievements of the Dominican Youth in the Maryland and DC Metro area. This will be a great opportunity for us to get together and to learn more about the Awardees and the Susana de Moya Foundation. There will be good food and good music too – A Jazz Group.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to  view an exhibition of paintings by Jennifer Guzman. Miss Guzman was the recipient of the Susana de Moya Award in 2002. Jennifer is currently a Senior at Maryland Institute College of Art and will be graduating with a Bachelors degree in May of this year.

Albert Rivera Concert on June 5, 2009

The Albert Rivera Quartet

Thanks to all who attended this event. A good time was had by all.

A few of the attendees expressed interest in holding events such as these three or four times a year. Please come to our next meeting to share your ideas about future events with us.

To answer a question that was frequently asked:  The desserts were catered  from Pattiserie Poupon, on Baltimore Street.
